The Center for Research on Education and School Development (IFS) at the TU Dortmund University is organizing this symposium. Theoretical approaches and current findings will be presented and discussed to address the question of whether these two educational goals are actually in conflict or to what extent they can support each other given certain conditions. Taking into account the normative task that all learners should acquire basic competencies, the role of socio-emotional aspects in learning and the question of how socio-emotional learning can be designed for heterogeneous groups will be considered. It will be discussed how contemporary educational research can enrich the multidimensional educational process to address the various educational goals.
